In December 2006 Czech
Rugby League secretary Milan Mrtýnek
and coach Andy Fairhurst made their
first visit to Hlinky school in Beroun,
a city around 30km west of Prague, to
do a Rugby League taster session with
pupils aged 15-18. Taking place in an
indoor hall due to the sub-zero outdoor
conditions, this session was the first
of many, beginning fortnightly then
moving to weekly as interest grew. Czech
Captain Michal Priputen soon joined
the schools development team and by
spring 2007 there were three local schools
participating in weekly rugby league
coaching sessions.
Even at this early
stage visiting European Development
Officer Kevin Rudd was impressed with
the standards established by the Czech
Rugby League and excited at the potential
for growth within the region. As the
weather improved, the sessions moved
outside onto a grass football pitch
in Beroun and the arranging of a game
against UK team Gateshead Panthers as
a curtain raiser for the Czech Republic
XIII v British Police game led to even
greater numbers at training.
A combined Beroun schools team played
the first ever junior game in the country
on May 23rd 2007, defeated 30-18 by
Gateshead Panthers in front of over
1,300 spectators including all the pupils
from the participating schools. The
skill level and enthusiasm shown by
the novice Czech team impressed the
visiting guests, including RFL chief
Richard Lewis, including eye-catching
performances from 15-year-old Honza
Buben at loose forward, Lada Šebek in
the centre and fullback Kuba Hrbač.
With 5 of the outstanding Czech junior
players being selected to represent
the Euro Celts team in the European
Nations U16s championships in Serbia,
coach Andy Fairhurst accompanied the
team to Belgrade where the Czech players
impressed in helping the 6th-seeded
Euro Celts to a 3rd overall placing,
beating hosts Serbia in the 3rd/4th
playoff final. The Czech’s outstanding
player Honza Buben was unlucky not to
be selected in the tournament-best Euro
Select XIII after being narrowly outvoted
on the final day, a considerable feat
considering he only saw a rugby ball
for the first time some four months
previously.
Whilst in Serbia, junior players Petr
Dobřemýsl and Lada Šebek also played
for a Belgrade team in the Serbian domestic
competition as well as representing
the Euro Celts, whilst 18-year old Kuba
Hrbač from Hlinky school has already
appeared in the senior Czech national
team against a touring UK side and in
the international games with Germany
and Serbia.
In January 2008 the first junior club
was launched, the Beroun Black Panthers,
named after the Gateshead Panthers who
were the first opposition for the team
and donated their playing kit after
the match. The team is coached and managed
by Michal Priputen and Kuba Hrbač and
a number of other volunteers, and will
play domestic games and tour games at
u16 and u18 level in 2008.
